We had a great stay at Kelleys Trout River Inn, such wonderful hosts and superb huckleberry muffins. Doug Spencer, local trail angel, graciously gave us a ride back up to the trail with another hiker, Venture, who we have been seeing on and off for several days now.

Today the weather was very miserable. Clouds and mist loomed overhead for the entire day, weaving in and out of the 12,700 foot peak of Mt. Adams, providing an interesting perspective on the mountain in harsher weather.

We had our coats and gloves and hats on all day and were still chilly. Eventually the sky opened and it started raining. The temperature was probably mid to upper 40s, making the hiking in the afternoon quite miserable, and the conditions fairly hazardous, to be honest. Hypothermia is a real hazard when it is wet and this cold and raining. Then it actually started snowing. And it was fantastically windy. Fun times.

We stopped early after scoring a very sheltered campsite under some dense trees. We were able to set up the tent without rain, which was nice. We are curled up in our sleeping bags getting warmed up. Conditions are forecast to be like this at least until tommorrow, which doesn’t interest us. We should have double zeroed at the bed and breakfast and come back out when the weather was good again!

I want nothing more than to see the sun and some blue sky. What happened to our great weather? Ever since we crossed into Washington it’s been terrible.

Today was not a good day to start off September.
