Camino Norte: Day 15

Llanes to Camping la Sauces

Km walked: 32

Km total: 398

We woke up at 6:30 to pounding rain and then went back to bed. The forecast said it would start clearing by 10:00 AM so we weren’t in any kind of rush to get going. Two hours later we started to rise and get our things together. We had learned yesterday there was a breakfast buffet for only 8 euros, so we ventured downstairs to see what it was all about. It did not disappoint. Eggs and bacon and muffins and grilled cheese and ham sandwiches and coffee and pastries and fresh fruit graced every inch of the place. We shoveled plate after plate into our dwindling stomachs to make them full again. It was fantastic.

The rain never let up before we left, so we decided to buy some umbrellas we saw at the bargain store down the street. With two polka dot umbrellas now added to our kit, we headed out. I never would bring an umbrella on an actual wilderness hike, but somehow it seemed more appropriate on this trip, probably because the walking is easy and it is not difficult to hold an umbrella. Anyway, It worked brilliantly and I think I found my new favorite thing.

The walking today was really good. We hiked on mostly dirt roads that offered great views of the ocean and foothills of the Picos mountains. It was probably one of the most scenic days we’ve had so far. The rain stopped soon after we began hiking, but resumed again later in the day. It remained off and on until we reached the campground, sometimes sunny, sometime rainy.

The rain had stopped around dinner but it is raining again. I hope it clears up during the night and the tent can dry a bit. I really dislike packing out a wet tent in the morning. But the rain is nice to listen to on the tent. It’s good music to help you fall asleep.
