PCT: Day 81

July 10th, 2016

Miles Hiked: 19 Miles

Start Location: Mile 1153

End Location: Mile 1172

End Location GPS: 39.42513, -120.44763

We slept in and had breakfast at the lodge. The chef wore sunglasses and had shaky hands and crooked teeth but the pancakes and eggs were not bad. We passed on the bacon but it looked pretty good.

The whole experience at the lodge reminded me of the movie The Shining- except we left the place alive and neither of us went crazy. There was also no hedge mazes or weird twins on tricycles but the mood was such that it wouldn’t have surprised me.

We walked back to Donner Pass and got back on the trail. The terrain was easy and in several hours came upon a cool hut constructed by the Sierra Club. This was the Peter Grubbb hut built to honor Mr. Grubb, who was an active member of the Sierra Club in the early 1900s and made first summits on a lot of peaks in the High Sierra. He died at the young of 18 while bicycle touring in Italy and later a bunch of letters were found written by him to his grandfather. The letters were published in a book which was at the hut and they were interesting to read. The letters all talked about his skiing and climbing adventures  and his work with the Sierra Club.

It is cold tonight where we are camped. It will be in the 30s tonight, which I believe is odd this time of year. We will hike into the next town tommorrow Sierra City which is 23 miles away.
