It’s raining steady right now. Thunder rolls through the sky like bowling balls down a lane hitting strikes every time. We slept in a little and got a later start than usual. We decided to call it a short day when we saw the storm clouds roll in from the west and rain droplets started to fall on our heads. There was a really good camping spot that we had just passed by and decided to camp there for the night.

There is a section of trail that is closed up ahead, called the Mountain Fire Closure, where about 20 miles of trail are closed due to a forest fire a few years ago.

There is an alternate but it is mostly on roads. Most everyone we have talked to is hitch hiking into the next town stop, Idylwild, where the trail crosses highway 74 about 15 miles from where we are camping tonight. From Idylwild there is a side trail that will get you back to the open section of the PCT. I’m not a fan of road walking so we are going to do what the majority are doing and hitch into Idylwild tomorrow. Depending on how we are feeling we may take a zero day there as well.

Carolyn was feeling a little down this morning so I think an extended stay in town will give her the psychological boost she needs! And to be honest it will be nice to put up my feet as well!
