Canoeing America’s Mississippi River

The cycling portion of this year is done. The backpacking portion is done too. What does this mean? Time moves too fast, and the final trip of the year is almost here.

In a few days I will set off to canoe the Mississippi River from its headwaters in Lake Itasca, Minnesota to where it discards itself into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The only canoe experience I have is during summer camp when I was 13 years old. But, that should’t be too much of a problem, right? I’ve done the research and watched some YouTube videos so I’m basically an expert now. My arms will grow stronger as the days press on, and hopefully my adolescent teenage girl arms will develop into muscular man guns by the time we reach the end. Plus, my friends will be with me. What could possibly go wrong?

I don’t know how long it will take to canoe the whole thing. Most people take 2-3 months to complete the 2,320 mile traverse, so we’ll see how it goes. I’m sure the adventure will present interesting stories and tales, and I’ll try my best to provide a description of the trip without complaining too much. No guarantees, though. I am well out of my comfort zone again, and it feels like how I felt before setting off on my cross country cycling adventure back in January. The best way to learn is by doing, and I’m sure as the river miles meander slowly on, my competency in all things canoe will increase.

Thanks to all of you that stop by regularly to read my thoughts. You give me a reason to keep this site going and I’m grateful for that.

This is the river
