Camino Norte: Day 24

May 27th, 2017

Ribadeo to Mondonedo (Alburgue de Perigrino)

Km walked: 36 km

Km total: 657

It was a misty and cloudy morning as we walked out of Ribadeo, but it wasn’t really raining, and that was okay. The forecast for the next three days looked glum- lots of rain and thunderstorms.

We climbed up into the hills and walked through pine forests on nice jeep roads. There are nice way markers now that we are in Galacia. They are stone pillars with arrows, and they even have the total distance remaining to Santiago on each one, down to the meter. This gets kind of frustrating after a while, because the numbers move so slowly, just like the highway markers on a freeway during a long drive, reminding you constantly how far you still have to go.

There were quite a few ascents up into the hills and descents down into valleys. We passed a number of small farming villages along the way, and saw the typical cows and horses and sheep that we see on a daily bases. Dogs barked at us, while cats looked at us bewildered and disinterested.

As we got into Mondonedo, a huge thunderstorm passed through and we sought cover underneath the awning of an information kiosk. It rained terribly hard and the streets became a river of running water. When it ended, we continued on the final kilometer to the municipal Alburgue.

We are Alburgue-ing it up tonight on account of the really awful weather. It’s supposed to rain most of the day tomorrow and I’m not looking forward to it. After Monday things should start clearing up a bit. There is a hovering weather system here that doesn’t want to go away. All we need is about 5 days of good weather to finish the trail but that doesn’t seem to correspond with our reality.
