Camino Norte: Day 12

Camping de Santillana to Alburgue de Perigrino Camilla

Km walked: 23

Km total: 318

I wasn’t able to sleep that well at the campsite, something I attribute to the slanted ground we slept on, making me slide into Carolyn all night. I woke up tired and sore and didn’t really feel like walking more road miles. The sunrise was pleasant at least- purple and orange over a dark green valley, with palm trees in the foreground just as still and quiet as stone. Don’t ask me why there are palm trees here. We see them off and on, sometimes in the most unusual places- on top of a hill, or tucked away in the middle of a pine forest.

The walking was marginally better today, but was still lackluster. It is something that will just have to be dealt with. Perhaps over time it will transition back to what the first week offered.

The campsite we planned on staying at was not open yet for the season, so we are at an Alburgue tonight. It is cheap at only 5 euros a person. This lessens the sting somewhat. There are windows near our beds that we can open or close as we please- so they will be left open all night. Such control should not be understated. Normally you have no control over the temperature in these things which often leads to warm hot boxes at night.

Hopefully I can sleep okay tonight. I have my earplugs at the ready. You are a fool if you come to one of these things without them. Its like showing up with a knife to a gunfight- your going to get burned.

There are interesting pictures like this on cigarette cartons here. This is one of the funnier ones.

Ugh- an Alburgue!
