The ascent up Khatadin was great today. Got an early start around 0645 and took it slow with my dad and friend Steve to the top. The hike up we took the Abol trail and went down the Hunt trail which is the AT route. The top looked as expected from other photos and was very beautiful. Met another hiker called Smooth Sailin’. He is doing a flip flop hike and has come north after doing a section from Harper’s Ferry, WV through PA. He told me he ran into a guy named Samurai who hikes with a real samurai sword, and if he finds a bear or wild boar he will try and kill it, make a fire and eat its heart! Then he will quit the trail. Hopefully he doesn’t mistake me for either of the two animals listed. Tomorrow will be a relatively flat 13.4 mile day to the closest shelter. There is a thunderstorm now but hopefully it will clear by morning. Looking forward to the 100 mile wilderness tomorrow…should be an adventure.
